Sunflowers
written by Roberta (Virgo 10)

And there were sunflowers last summer,
The Fourth of July and carnivals.
A concert of my dreams with the Everly Brothers
The trip of my imagination to Disney World.

And there were sunflowers last summer,
There was the Labor Day picnic
And my birthday on September 10th
And, OH, my Disney World trip got closer and closer.

And there were sunflowers last summer on an ordinary day
Feed the cats, make the coffee
Check my email and do rewards.
And stop to answer the phone (at 9:10 a.m.?!)

And then the sunflowers last summer
Bowed their heads as the petals fell like tears
And mingled with my own
A day became a week that is all one memory.

And there is a sunflower this summer
Not as bright or vibrant but, like us, a survivor.
I watch it from my window and wait for September.
For the leaves to change and Disney World and the petals to fall.
