Date: MLK Weekend - January 18 - 20, 2008
Cast: 2 North Carolina families that are good friends. Each family has 2
boys, and the kids are ages 10, 7, 7, and 2. I'm not telling you how old I am!
Let’s just say I’ve enjoyed my 36th birthday several times.
Lodging: Wilderness Lodge - yeah, baby!
Day 2 Friday Magic Kingdom
Pixie dust moments:
- When we arrived at the MK, there was a moment heading over to Fantasyland around the castle where it was just us—no one else in sight. Wow.
- My little one’s expression on all of the rides in Fantasyland. I wish I could
bottle that feeling.
A Few Sticky Points:
- Although the Mickey/Stitch wake-up call was cute, my snoozing kids never heard it. The early phone call was always a shock to my husband (who was closest to the phone) and he could never manage to find the speakerphone button in the semi-dark! :-)
- We made it just in time for the MK train in Toontown, only to have the gates
close right before we could pass through. Darn!
- The crowds REALLY picked up at about 11:00 and BTMRR area was packed.
- The playground was closed, much to my toddler’s dismay.
- My 7 year old rode Space Mountain when he was 4—he’s very tall for his age---and loved it! At 7, he doesn’t love it anymore. He spent the whole ride in a
panic, yelling “Mom! This is NOTHING like BTMRR!” I’m afraid that he’s never
going to believe me about anything again!
- Stitch’s Great Escape—Ick! The older kids loved it because it was gross. The
chilidog breath was disgusting! Never again.
- I missed COP, and I’m afraid that it may have been my last chance. I have heard rumors from CMs that the ride is going to close.
- I didn’t get my Dole Whip today. A trip to the MK without a Dole Whip?!
Really good stuff:
- Tour Guide Mike’s MK morning advice was perfect! We were able to experience every (yes, every) attraction in Fantasyland by 10:30 with very little to no lines.
- Philharmagic—my favorite attraction of all! I love the champagne bottles
popping open.
- According to the CMs on Main Street, we got the last pair of kid-sized black
Mickey ears in the entire park for my little guy. Now he has a hat to match his
big brother’s.
- The boat ride to and from WL/MK. I dig the Disney buses, but the boat is the
bomb.
- Buzz Lightyear-my 7-year old hit something worth 100,000 points. He was so
happy!
- Space Mountain-what a ride! Wheee!
- Laughing about IASW with my boat mates—the 2 year old was really into the ride, the older kids and adults, not so much…but it was really fun, anyway!
Grubbin’ and Shoppin’ around MK:
- I am always pleasantly surprised with Pecos Bill’s. I always wonder how good can a burger joint be? I think that it is the grilled mushrooms and onions that
make that boring sandwich more interesting. Is it just me, or does anyone else
thing that MK fries are yucky?
- Crystal Palace—good food for the adults, good fun for the kids. I really
enjoyed the bleu cheese salad and the fire-roasted corn spoon bread. It was a
lively place, maybe a bit crowded. Great character interaction and wonderful
pictures.
Things I’d do differently:
- Eat lunch earlier than 11:30 to avoid the crowds.
- We watched Wishes from the balcony area of the Tomorrowland Noodle Station. It was great to have a place to sit, but the lights and the limited view weren’t.
- I wasn’t able to follow all of Tour Guide Mike’s advice. Our group of 8 just
doesn’t move that fast! It was fabulous for the early morning, and then I
should’ve just chilled out a little bit and relaxed more when the time started
slipping away. There is only so much fun that you can pack into a short amount
of time! :-)
- Budget and time permitting, I’d plan for a day just to bum around the MK: meet characters, get the kids’ hair cut at the barbershop, wander along and really
look at all the details.
