I received this app for the purpose of writing this review.
Are you as excited about the upcoming Disney-Pixar film Inside Out as I am? It looks like a spectacular premise and I’m hearing nothing but good buzz surrounding the flick so far! So, I was super anxious to get the opportunity to try out the brand new option in the Disney Storybook Deluxe App family all about Inside Out. The app is aptly named Inside Out: Storybook Deluxe.
I was able to play with this app and let me tell you, it’s super fun! So let’s dive in and see what kind of memories you can make.
There are two major components to this app and it is very similar to other versions of the Storybook Deluxe apps, if you are familiar with those. (Well…technically, there are three major components…but the read and play option just allows you to do both at the same time, so I don’t really count that as a separate component.) The first is the story portion. (Don’t worry….I won’t spoil too much!)
With the story portion, you’ll be able to go through the whole story of the movie. You can choose to have the narrator read the story to you, or you can record your own voice so your child can hear you read the story to them.
Through the story, you’ll be able to interact with the five Emotions—Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger—to discover how they see the world! The art of the story portion is super fun and colorful! Plus, there are often also little vignettes from the movie; lots of great little animation sequences.
While reading, you also have the option to pick which chapter you were on, so in case you don’t finish the story for one particular reason or another, you can always go back.
The story part is the perfect companion piece to the movie.
Of course, there’s more to play with in the app…there’s also plenty of fun to be had with the play section. Here, you can do one of two things – Create Memory Spheres or Dream Productions.
With Memory Spheres, you can enhance your own memories (whether they be pictures or videos on your device) by selecting a mood for the photo and adding stickers, sounds, and more. It was quite fun getting to try to match the photo with the music (which there is a different soundtrack based off of the 5 different emotions featured in the movie) as well as adding different stickers.
You can add multiple memory orbs to your collection and then download them to your device to share with friends.
The second part of the games section is where you can create your own wacky dream sequence in the Dream Productions section of the app. This was, by far, my favorite part. You first choose which type of dream you want to create.
The monster in charge shows you a series of props you can use and based on their suggestions of what they are looking for for the story, you choose the prop that you want. (Kind of like Mad Libs.)
Once all your props are chosen, the dream begins and it can be super creative, based off of what you chose. For example, my characters are riding goats…in the ocean.
Overall, I thought the app was cute and fun. It’s the perfect companion to the movie! The Inside Out: Storybook Deluxe app is available for both the iPhone and the iPad and costs $6.99.
