I should specify something. I really like Italian food. It is probably my favorite cuisine. But that also means that I hold Italian food to a high standard.
When I lived in St. Louis, we had a place known as The Hill, where Italian delicacies were king and you could find many other fantastic Italian eateries all around the city.
This brings me to Walt Disney World. I feel like there is certainly a proliferation of Italian restaurants. They range from Tony’s Town Square on Main Street USA, to the Tutto Italia in the Italy Pavilion, to the new Teralina Crafted Italian and Maria & Enzo’s at Disney Springs. Disney attempts Italian a lot. So, on a recent trip, when a bunch of friends had a reservation, I decided I would try Trattoria al Forno.
When you walk in off the BoardWalk at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Trattoria al Forno feels as though it’s a traditional Italian eatery. There is an open kitchen and the space has plenty of seating. The menu itself includes pizzas, lasagna, bolognese, ravioli, chicken parm, and more. Standard Italian fare. Guests are presented with bread and olive oil as an opener, which is a nice touch. It was certainly crusty, but in that fresh bread kind of way.
I ended up getting the Pasta alla Carbonara, which is a stepped up version of Fettuccine Carbonara. It features Local Organic Eggs, Pecorino Romano, and House-cured Pancetta. It sounded incredible.
It was just ok. The pasta was a little gummy. In addition, the sauce was both a little saltier, as well as a little pepperier thank I would have liked. Otherwise, it was pretty bland.
A friend of mine had the lasagna though, and he really liked it.
They also got pizzas to split amongst the table, which are decent sized and are the perfect “appetizer” if you want to split them with a group. (Or good as meal on their own.)
I still haven’t found an outstanding Italian option at Walt Disney World and it surprises me. With the number of choices, they are all just decent. Nothing has completely knocked my socks off. I’m desperately craving delicious Italian and while I enjoyed my meal, I still find the the pricing at most of these restaurants is just a bit higher than I want spend. Especially since Italian restaurants abound both at Walt Disney World and outside of the World too. It’s not that Trattoria al Forno is bad and I think if you’re looking for an Italian option, it’s perfectly fine, but it’s just missing that oomph factor, for me.
I would like to try Trattoria al Forno for breakfast though. It is now a character breakfast called the Bon Voyage Breakfast where you get to meet Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Ariel, and Prince Eric.
