One of my favorite places to grab breakfast was Captain’s Grille at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. When the restaurant underwent a massive refurbishment, and changed over to Ale & Compass, I still enjoyed dining here, but my favorite breakfast option was removed from the menu, which disappointed me greatly.
So, imagine my delight when I learned that my favorite item has now returned to the menu! I immediately booked a reservation the first opportunity that I had to enjoy the breakfast options here once again.
First, let’s get to the basics. Ale & Compass is found just off the main lobby. The restaurant is attached to the Ale & Compass Lounge, so if you’re looking for a small bite or beverage, that’s where you’ll want to head. The restaurant itself fits that nautical theme the resort is trying to convey with lots of blues and grays with a refined and modern feel.
Now, let’s get to my favorite dish that I was very pleased to see was now back on the menu.
The Dark Chocolate Waffles which are served with Espresso-Mascarpone Cream, Chocolate Shavings (and technically are supposed to have – Dried Cherry Compote on them. Now when reviewing things, I try to get dishes served as prepared, but this is one instance where I just can’t. I hate cherries with a passion.) These waffles are served with your choice of bacon or sausage. I chose bacon.
My waffles were as good as ever. They are sweet and the mascarpone cream on top is so delicious. The best thing is that there are three decent sized waffles here and I cannot eat them all. Even though I’ve tried. The bacon was quite yummy too. Cooked to perfection.
The restaurant also brought back a buffet, but this time it’s in a different form. It can be found on the main bar area, attached to the open kitchen. The options look plentiful AND you still get to choose from one of the entrees too.
We also tried the Salted Caramel-Apple French Toast. The apples on the french toast aren’t super sweet; more tart than anything with a bit of cinnamon. There’s a drizzle of caramel, but not enough. Overall, while these are good, there are better things on the menu.
Speaking of better things on the menu, and let me tell you when I wasn’t expecting this to become a favorite. It is the Eggs Benedict. This is served with Poached Eggs, Smoked Pork Loin, Roasted Tomatoes, English Muffin, and Spiced Herb Hollandaise served with Potatoes. I was not expecting much from this dish, but one bite and I was in love. It was savory and had incredible flavor. Everything worked so well together. I would strongly suggest getting this, especially if you like Eggs Benedict. (And even if you think you don’t.)
Overall, Ale & Compass impressed me again. While I wasn’t completely in love after my last experience, now that they’ve added some of the fan favorites back to the menu, oh and I’ve found out that this Eggs Benedict is definitely something I will add the my breakfast repertoire here, this is certainly a go-to option for me once again.
