Rope Drop is the time of day when the parks at Walt Disney World open. The Magic Kingdom‘s rope drop is exciting to watch and be a part of. It’s also a great way to get to the most popular rides first and decrease your wait time. In the past, rope drop at the Magic Kingdom required guests to wait outside the park in front of the train station.
In 2017, Disney made a change to the rope drop procedure, giving guests access to Main Street U.S.A. long before the park opens. Prior to this, guests had limited opportunities to enter the park early. Character breakfasts and Extra Magic Hours are two examples. My family and I try to arrive early in the Magic Kingdom at least once while we’re there. So, what can you expect during rope drop?
Disney will let you into the Magic Kingdom about an hour before the park opens. My family and I arrived at 7:45 a.m., stood in line for the security check, and walked right in around 8:00 a.m. It was amazing to stand on Main Street U.S.A. with a few hundred people instead of the usual thousands. It let us slow down for a minute to take in the atmosphere of Main Street. This was especially true our second day in the Magic Kingdom when we didn’t feel the need to rush around.
At the Hub, ropes block the path to each land. A Cast Member is also there to prevent guests from entering until the park opens. Most people tend to gather in the Hub to wait. This is the perfect time to take your family picture in front of Cinderella Castle without a lot of people in the background.
If rushing to the front of the line isn’t a priority, take a few minutes to check out the shops and buildings that line Main Street. Every time I go to the Magic Kingdom, I notice more and more how much detail is put into everything. Make sure to check out the fun displays in shop windows!
Right before rope drop, Mickey and his friends put on a Magic Kingdom Welcome Show. It’s located on stage in front of Cinderella Castle. It’s really cute and is a special way to start the day! After the show, the rope is “dropped” so guests can walk, not run, to their favorite ride.
Whether you want to be the first one in line for your favorite ride, or just want extra time in the Magic Kingdom; it’s worth it to get up early on your vacation and check it out!
