Sometimes, even on your dream vacation, reality intrudes and something goes wrong. And by something I mean some sort of illness or injury. Trust me, I’ve had pretty much everything happen from bronchitis to being hit in the knee with a pirate ship (yes, it really did happen). So, when something goes wrong, what to do? There are several options and they are sometimes hard to evaluate when you are in the moment, so it’s always good to have the info ahead of time.
Let’s start small ;o) If you have something fairly simple and uncomplicated, your best bet may be to go with a Walgreen’s Take Care Clinic. This is a good option for an ear infection, strep throat, UTI or similar conditions. They are first come, first served so you just check in and put your name on the list, but usually the wait is not long. The Clinic does take some insurance plans, but if they do not take yours the visit will start at $65 with tests being an additional cost. You will get a receipt that you can use to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. There are 2 locations near Disney property, one at 7767 W Irlo Bronson Blvd and one at 12100 Apopka Vineland Rd. Both locations are open from 8:00am-7:30pm Monday-Friday and 9:30am-5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
CVS has a similar facility called a Minute Clinic. Their hours are 8:30am-7:30 pm Monday-Friday, 9am-5:30 pm on Saturday and 10am-5:30 pm on Sunday with a daily lunch break. Their visits start at $69 if not covered by your insurance and they have a location at 5308 W Irlo Bronson Blvd.
For something a bit more serious but not a major emergency, you’ll want to look at CentraCare. It’s a Walk-In Urgent Care Center, and they can come pick you up at your resort. They are also a first come first served facility for walk-ins, but if you have internet access you can make an appointment. Their phone number is 407-200-CARE. Near Downtown Disney there is a location at 12500 South Apopka Vineland Rd which is open from 8am-Midnight Monday-Friday and 8am-8 pm Saturday and Sunday.
If you have a sick child that you don’t want to drag out to see someone, or you feel like you can’t get out of bed, then there are doctors that will come to you. These options are not inexpensive and they do not take insurance plans. You will need to pay the bill in full and they will give you a receipt that you can submit for reimbursement. The benefit is that the doctor will come right to your hotel room and they can often bring medicine with them. CentraCare has this option and the phone number is 407-200-2000.
Another option for the same service is Doctors on Call. They are a 24 hour service and can be reached at 407-399-DOCS.
In an emergency, of course you can call 911, but, if you’d prefer to transport yourself, there is Celebration Hospital. The hospital is located at 400 Celebration Place. The phone number is 407-303-4000.
If you opt for CentraCare or the Hospital you may end up with a prescription and need a place to fill it. In that case, I’d recommend Turner Drugs. They can be reached at 407-828-8125. Their address is 1530 Celebration Blvd, Suite 105-A. The great thing about Turner Drugs is that they deliver directly to your resort and they can just charge the prescription to your room account. They can also deliver non-prescription meds and other pharmacy type items if needed. They do not take any insurance plans, but will provide a receipt for reimbursement.
With any luck you will never need to use any of these options, but you can never be too prepared!
