It’s not something that many of us get to experience, but every three to four years, my sister and I take a girls only trip to Walt Disney World; no husbands, no kids.
Growing up, the only vacation that we ever took as a family was to Disney so I think that has a little something to do with our attraction (obsession!) with going there. A trip with just the girls as an adult only trip is very different than a family trip and it is nice to embrace the differences.
First, there is the hotel. When I go with my husband and kids, we stay at a Value resort. I love Disney’s value resorts; they are fun, festive and since we are basically only sleeping in our rooms, they are great for the money. When it’s just us girls, we upgrade to a deluxe. I have had the opportunity to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, The Boardwalk and the Grand Floridian on previous trips and for our upcoming one, we will be staying at the Wilderness Lodge.
Because we stay for a shorter amount of time and because we want a little more peace and quiet, staying at the deluxe resorts is a feasible choice. Sure, for our getaways we could have chosen some spa to go to but we prefer to indulge in the finest that Disney has to offer!
We still hit all of the theme parks but without the kids, we can get through them a lot faster. We hit all of our favorites, take lots of silly pictures and then head back to the hotel for an extended period of sunning and swimming before we get our second wind and hit the parks again in the evening.
Dining is a pleasure because without our children, we don’t dine at any character meals. We can choose some of the lesser known restaurants and enjoy a more leisurely meal. While I do miss eating at the Crystal Palace, I have had the chance to discover new places to enjoy. The trip that we will take in September has us dining on the Boardwalk at Kouzzina by Cat Cora – a Mediterranean restaurant.
Some other fine choices that we have taken advantage of on our trips include room service for breakfast, drinks by the pool and late afternoon massages on our departure day. It’s glorious to have the queen-size bed to yourself! It’s wonderful to only have to share the bathroom with one other person and personally, it is quite refreshing to just have a little “me” time where I can choose to either kick back by the pool or race to Space Mountain.
But the biggest perk to doing a girls-only trip, is the quality time that we get to spend together cherishing not only our childhood memories but making new ones. Our pace is slower and more relaxed, we get to spend time at attractions that might not be appealing to our kids and for those four glorious days we get to be kids again before having to return home and return to being the mom.

I don’t know if I could bring myself to go without my kids (or if they would stand for it), but it sounds like a wonderful girls’ getaway!
