On my most recent trip to Walt Disney World I had plans to attend Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. I knew that I need to to eat dinner before the party, but hadn’t made any dining reservations for the evening. I figured, I’d just grab a quick service meal at the park before the party started.
However, I called an audible. That’s because I was currently visiting Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort to see the life-size gingerbread house that is up for the holiday season and knew that the Grand Floridian Cafe was nearby. I got on the app to see if I could make a reservation, but alas, none were available, so I decided, let’s just go check to see if they have any walk-ups. The Cast Member inquired if I would be willing to eat at that moment and I said sure, so they walked me right back to a table.
The Grand Floridian Cafe feels a little stuffy, much like I feel the rest of the resort does. It’s also kind of an unremarkable place. Nothing seems overtly special about the decor, but that can be ok. I’m just there to have a meal.
For my meal, I decided to try the Shrimp and Grits. This dish is served with Jumbo Shrimp, Chorizo and Fennel served on top of Creamy Mascarpone Cheese Grits. It was delicious! There were a number of very large shrimp, the grits were exceptionally creamy and cheesy, and the sauce was super yummy! There was a bit of a kick to my sensitive palate, but it was certainly manageable. I would 100% go back for this dish.
My husband decided to get the Cafe Sandwich, which is an open-faced hot sandwich served with Ham, Roasted Turkey Breast, Bacon, Tomato, Boursin Cheese Sauce, and a side of Onion Rings. The sandwich was piled high with toppings and the onion rings were plentiful and huge.
The best thing about the Grand Floridian, besides the fact that the food really is good is that the pricing here is not crazy expensive. Dishes here are quite reasonable.
If you’re ever looking for a great meal that’s close to the Magic Kingdom, but a little away from the craziness of the park, give the Grand Floridian Cafe a chance.
