When most travelers contemplate where to stay for a Walt Disney World vacation, they think about the big three categories of Disney-owned and operated resorts: Value, Moderate and Deluxe. Most of them don’t even consider a stay at Fort Wilderness.
In fact, the very existence of Disney’s campground often comes as a surprise to guests, even though the campground has been in operation since the early days of Walt Disney World. I’ve had the opportunity to stay here once, and I’d like to share with you my top five reasons you should stay here:
YOU’VE GOT A BIG FAMILY
If you’ve got six people in your family, traditional hotel rooms are going to be problematic. You’ll need to get two hotel rooms to accommodate your party. But the cabins at Fort Wilderness each sleep six. There’s one queen sized bed, bunk beds, and a double sized sleeper sofa. This means that a party of six can all sleep in one room. Add to this the fact that you have a kitchen and a grill on the patio, giving you the ability to cook some of your meals yourself. This could add up to big savings.
YOU OWN AN RV
If you’re interested in driving your RV to Walt Disney World, you’re in luck. Fort Wilderness features RV campsites with sewage hookups. And some campsites feature even more room, where you can hook up your RV and pitch a small tent! The concrete pads range from 10 feet by 45 feet to 18 feet by 60 feet, so you can choose a size that best fits your family’s needs.
YOU LOVE TENT CAMPING
If your idea of a perfect vacation includes pitching or popping up a tent and roughing it, guess what? You can do that right here on Walt Disney World property! The concrete pads here are 10 feet by 25 feet, and you’re surrounded by lush greenery that feels completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks, even though the entire campground is connected to the rest of the World by complimentary Disney transportation. Traipsing through theme parks all day and then sleeping in a sleeping bag at night might not work for everyone, but my husband and I did this when we were both in our 20s and had a fantastic time!
YOU DEFINITELY WILL SCHEDULE NON-PARK DAYS
Fort Wilderness features some of the best recreation on property. Some of it requires an additional fee, but many of it is included in your reservation. You can rent a canoe, go fishing, enjoy the pools and whirlpool, visit the horses who work on Main Street, U.S.A. on their days off, take a pony, wagon or carriage ride, join Chip and Dale for a campfire and sing-along, rend a motorboat, Segway, kayak or a bicycle, play basketball, go jogging, or visit the playground or the two arcades!
YOU’RE TRAVELING DURING HALLOWEEN OR CHRISTMAS
There are some pretty cool holiday traditions that frequent Fort Wilderness guests have started. If you’ll be at Walt Disney World during either Halloween of Christmas, do not miss the opportunity to wander throughout the Fort Wilderness campsites to see the amazing holiday displays your fellow campers have set up! This is something that Disney guests themselves started, and these guests are proud of their displays and love to show them off to fellow campers.
I hope this has tempted you to give Fort Wilderness a try!
