In my initial plans for 2020, one of the things I was planning on was my first runDisney race. Specifically, the Wine and Dine 10k. Like many other things this year, the specifics of that plan changed, but when the in person Wine and Dine events were cancelled, participants were given the opportunity to complete them virtually. My wife and I decided to do that, and I wanted to share how it went.
First, on the logistics. when the decision was made to cancel the in person events, anyone who was registered was given the choice between a refund or completing the virtual event and getting a Disney gift card, along with the race specific packet and swag.
The packet included race mile markers, bibs, and more, along with some training tips and a playlist. The race swag included a specially designed tech shirt, a medal, and a very fancy box to hold all of it.
When we actually ran our Wine and Dine 10k, we used some of the print at home materials for our race pictures and such. You may notice, however, that we didn’t include post race pictures with our shirts or medals. That is because they arrived about a month after the scheduled race day. While the initial info did say that these would be sent after the scheduled race day, it is something to know if you are planning on doing one of these virtual races that the shirt and medal will likely not be there for the race itself.
For that shirt and medal, the designs are really fun, as you might expect from runDisney. Seeing these in person does make me want to participate in one of these race weekends even more once they begin.
All in all, I do appreciate Disney making the effort to create a special event despite the external limitations and circumstances. As I said before, participating in a runDisney race weekend was on my goal list for the year, and I am going to still aim to do that going forward, but it was nice feeling a bit of the magic closer to home.
With the runDisney races all being run virtually so far for 2021, would you sign up for a virtual race? Share with us your thoughts in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter!
