The first time we visited Walt Disney World, our boys were 2 and 4-years-old. It was a wonderful, magical vacation, and we have many treasured memories from that trip. One of our favorite memories to laugh about is when my youngest son peed on Goofy’s Barnstormer (which has continued to be one of his favorite rides ever since).
Before you become too alarmed about cleanliness at the parks, let me clarify. He didn’t actual pee on the ride. He peed on his mother while waiting to board. It is a funny story, but I share with you not just for a laugh, but as an example of how accidents happen in the park, but the best thing to do is laugh them off and keep going.
We had arrived at Magic Kingdom just before it opened, had enjoyed several attractions and been at the “gates” of Mickey’s Toon Town Fair when it opened. We had seen Mickey and Minnie and had stopped to ride Goofy’s Barnstormer before leaving that section of the park.
My youngest was still in diapers, but showing signs of being ready to potty train. One of his most telling signs was that he did not like to wet his diaper. He had begun to dislike that feeling, and, on his own, had decided to try to avoid it. His way of avoiding that sensation was to not go to the bathroom at all. This made for a very grumpy toddler.
As we stood in line for Goofy’s Barnstormer, the toddler’s grumpiness was reaching a peak. I was holding him on my hip and telling him that he was in a bad mood because he needed to potty. I was trying to convince him to stop “holding it.” The line continued to move forward, and we knew that we would be on the next ride. As I stood there trying to convince my baby to give up his stubbornness, I felt something warm on my side and hip. I praised my little one for finally doing what he needed to do, but during my praising I began to become concerned about what I was feeling on my side. Instead of a warm diaper, I was feeling real heat. I realized that I had inadvertently pushed his diaper to one side as I held him on my hip and that the diaper was doing nothing for either of us. At that point, the train pulled into the station ready for us to load.
What’s a mom to do? Get out of 20-minute line only to stand in it again a few minutes later? No way! The casualties of this accident were the side of my shirt and the front of his pants. I decided that those areas would not touch the train cars, thus not contaminate them for future riders. So we rode, and we had a happy toddler who was no longer grumpy.
After the ride, we went into the restroom. His pants were very thin and already dry, but I washed them out anyway. I washed out the side of my shirt. Used the hand dryer to get the items somewhat dry. Re-diapered my boy, and off we went.
This experience just goes to show that a little accident is not worth getting upset over and does not have to spoil anyone’s fun. In fact, an accident can become a memorable experience passed down and retold in the family lore. Whenever we rode Goofy’s Barnstormer after that day, we laughed about what happened. Now my little one is 8, and we are all very sorry that we will not be able to ride Goofy’s Barnstormer this year because of the remodeling at WDW. We hope to see that attraction resurface in the future.
