There are few things that I like more than a cool app for my iPad 2…except for one thing: a cool DISNEY app for my iPad. So, when I got wind of the new Disneyland Explorer app by way of Twitter, I had to see and try it for myself!
Firstly, the Disneyland Explorer app is FREE (yaayy me!) I appreciate being able to try something without an up-front cost.
Secondly, when I went to the App store to download it, I saw that it had a rather large photo of Mickey in the foreground, with Sleeping Beauty’s castle in the background. Not having heard many of the details of the DL Explorer, I mistakingly assumed that it was an app geared more towards the young set, full of games and such. But since it was free, I proceeded to click on the icon and open it up.
Wow, was I pleasantly surprised! The Disneyland Explorer app is definitely very grown up (but kids will thoroughly enjoy it too!) This iPad app is a panoramic, 3-dimensional (clever CGI…no glasses needed, thankfully!) tour of Disneyland, Disney’s California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the Disneyland hotels. It is a bright, colorful, and engaging presentation with all the cleverness and detail that we have come to expect from a Disney product.
The first thing you reach after clicking is Sleeping Beauty’s castle, complete with a black-and-white image of Walt Disney himself, walking under the castle arch. Dumbo soars in the sky and over the castle, and you are ready to begin. As you touch the screen and move your finger across, the screen moves in a panoramic tour, taking you through each of the different land as your own pace. Of course, there is music paying, and it changes subtly to reflect your passage from one land to the next. As you stop and touch the screen in any particular land, there are what I call “pop-ups” that appear over certain key features, rides, and the like to give you brief information about that particular item. Also, you can click on the heart icon in the pop-up to mark it as a favorite to put in your Favorites list. When you click the white Mickey head icon in the top right-hand corner, you can access your favorites that you have marked in the balloon that Mickey and Goofy are flying overhead π
This app is about giving you a delightful and creative visual/audio tour of Disneyland, and it does not disappoint! Having never visited this particular theme park, I needed to get information for our upcoming trip, and, in my opinion, this is a great go-to app for such a reason. I enjoyed getting my bearings on what is there in Anaheim so that I can have a general idea of what I need to ride, see, and experience. The app itself is rather simplistic, but it suited my needs and I am pleased with my interaction with the Disneyland Explorer app…go download it for yourself and enjoy! π
