the Tree of Life, a symbol of the natural world
Today is Earth Day, the day when people around the globe celebrate the beautiful planet we are fortunate enough to live on. If your Walt Disney World trip coincides with this special day, you might be looking for ways to celebrate it! Here are some ideas:
LIVING WITH THE LAND
Located in Epcot’s Future World, this boat ride through actual greenhouses highlights the innovative ways gardeners at Walt Disney World are growing food in more environmentally friendly ways. If this ride inspires you, be sure to sign up for the Behind The Seeds tour to get a closer look at the greenhouses. And if looking at all the fresh produce and fish is making you hungry, know that many of the restaurants throughout Walt Disney World use foods grown in this pavilion!
WALT DISNEY PRESENTS
This exhibit in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a tribute to the man who started it all, Walt Disney. Many people don’t realize that Walt was an environmentalist long before it was popular to talk about protecting nature. From his early documentaries about the natural world to his insistence that the property purchased for Walt Disney World include a large area that was to be left in its natural state, Walt tried not only to preserve natural beauty, but to educate his audience about it, and encourage others to do the same. This exhibit lets you learn more about the man with this extraordinary vision.
IT’S A SMALL WORLD
If you find yourself in the Magic Kingdom‘s Fantasyland, this is the perfect place to celebrate Earth Day with the very young. Even small children can understand the simple truth that this attraction repeats over and over and over again: there is just one moon and one golden sun, and we are all sharing this planet and need to figure out how to do it responsibly. A classic from the 1964 World’s Fair, this gentle boat ride reminds us all, young and old, that it’s a small and precious world, after all.
PARTY FOR THE PLANET
It’s no surprise that Animal Kingdom celebrates Earth Day in a big way, since the park opened on Earth Day in 1998. No matter what day of the year, the park celebrates the diversity of nature, and finds entertaining ways to remind Guests to protect and preserve our natural environment. And this year, Animal Kingdom’s Party for the Planet will be held from April 20th – April 22nd. Enjoy interactive activities for the whole family, including character meet-and-greets, and entertainment. If you feel so inspired, there are many locations throughout the park where you can make a contribution to the Disney Conservation Fund, which is dedicated to protecting and preserving our natural world.
