Pixar Pier at California Adventure
Disneyland is brilliant and beautiful during the bright sunlit hours. The buildings on Main Street, U.S.A. gleam, and the rock formations of Radiator Springs look so real that it’s hard to imagine they’re not. But there are certain attractions at Disneyland that take on a special magic after dark. Here are my top picks:
STORYBOOK LAND CANAL BOATS
FANTASYLAND, DISNEYLAND PARK
This gentle, sweet boat ride takes guests on a narrated tour through miniatures representing many scenes and locations from Disney films. It’s very pretty by day, but the lighting on all the miniatures are spectacular at night. From being “swallowed” by Monstro the Whale to seeing Elsa’s ice palace, you will love this ride after dark!
MAD TEA PARTY
FANTASYLAND, DISNEYLAND PARK
Just steps away from the Storybook Land Canal Boats, this is a Disneyland original, and one that kids of all ages seem to love. Pick a teacup and twirl wildly around! After dark, the beautiful lighting and cool night air enhance your ride.
IT’S A SMALL WORLD
FANTASYLAND, DISNEYLAND PARK
Very little of this ride takes place outdoors, but the exterior of this building is fascinating after dark. Depending on the season, you might find it lit up with countless sparkling Christmas lights, or covered in spooky Halloween projections, or simply glowing with multicolored lights. Bonus tip: If you decide to ride the Disneyland Railroad after dark, make sure to ride it past Fantasyland, as the train will go right by the lit up it’s a small world building!
RADIATOR SPRINGS RACERS
CARSLAND, CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
All of Carsland looks wonderful once the neon lights come on after dark. But this ride, which takes place both indoors and out, is a highlight. Racing against your opponent, hurtling through the darkness, is especially thrilling. Keep your eyes open and you’ll see what I’m talking about!
PIXAR PAL-A-ROUND
PIXAR PIER, CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
For glorious views of the Disneyland Resort at night, there’s no better vantage point than from in one of the cars of this massive Ferris wheel. The more adventurous will want to select a swinging car. Those who prefer a gentle, quiet ride (like me!) will stick to the stationary cars. Even if you don’t feel like riding, the wheel itself looks stunning at night, all lit up with its vibrant colors.
THE INCREDICOASTER
PIXAR PIER, CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
This coaster is the fastest and most thrilling in all of Disneyland. You’ll speed through enclosed tunnels, long drops and a heart pounding inversion to try to help the Incredibles find Jack Jack. The lighting effects at night are incredible (pun totally intended) and feeling the cool wind in your hair just adds to the excitement.
