I received this app free of charge, so I could try it out and share my thoughts with you.
La Luna is the Pixar short film that accompanied the movie Brave at the theaters. You know, there are quite a few different Pixar shorts, but of all of them, I think my favorite is La Luna. La Luna tells the story of a young boy who goes to work with his father and grandfather for the first time.
La Luna: The Story Project is an iPad app that shows the different steps that went into the making of La Luna. I love to see how movies are made. {Yes, I did buy the Disney Animated app.} But, as usual, my kids grabbed the iPad as soon as La Luna: The Story Project started to download.
When I had the chance to look at this app myself, I started by turning back the page to see the “Behind the Scenes” options.
I started off with the first option of learning about “Storyboards”. Then, to my surprise, I found several of the storyboards and was able to flip through many of the drawings. I’m not sure that all of them are there, but there are quite a few. Then, I clicked on the “Turntable” to see the rough characters in three dimension. Under the “Sound Design” tab, there are videos of how some sounds were made and the section of the short film the sounds appeared in. In the “Visual Design” section, there are drawings of different objects in the film, like the hammer and shed.
The final section, “Progression Reel”, is probably my favorite section of the app. In this section, there are videos of the three different stages of production: Storyboard, Animation, and Finished Film. I had fun choosing 2 of the 3 options to watch them side-by-side. It was interesting to see how they fit together.
Next, I chose to check out the “Interactive Video” from the menu page. This video gave me several places to interact with the video by swiping the screen to change pictures, for example. The above picture is my favorite part of the interactive video where I was able to move the iPad back-and-forth as the boy fell through the stars.
From there, I moved on to the “Storybook”. What is neat is that by clicking the magnifying glass in the upper right-hand corner, I was able to replace the storybook photo with a still from the short film. I’m not sure which picture I prefer, to tell the truth. The last option on the menu page is “Short Film”. This is where I was able to watch the full La Luna short film.
So, what did I think about La Luna: The Story Project? There are so many great back-story items in this app that this is a “must-have” app for any Disney/Pixar animation fan. At $3.99, I think the app is well priced for all that is in it, considering a Pixar short film on iTunes is $1.99. Note: This app is not compatible with all iPads. Please verify that your iPad will work with this app before making a purchase.
Disclosure: I received this app free of charge for the purpose of this review. I did not receive any other compensation from the app provider, nor was I required to write a positive review.
