My favorite food is Mickey shaped food! That’s a food group, right?! Sometimes it’s fun to bring the magic home – and at home Disney inspired recipes is one way to do that! Let’s bake some Mickey Mouse pretzels!
Ingredients
• 1 ½ c lukewarm water
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 2 ¼ tsp yeast (1 packet)
• 1 tsp salt
• 4 c flour
• 1/3 c baking soda (for boiling)
• 6 c water (for boiling)
• 1 egg
• Coarse salt
Step One
Preheat your oven to 425°. To begin, mix the sugar into the lukewarm water. Sprinkle the yeast into the water. I used instant yeast, but if you are more familiar with yeast than I am, you could probably use alternatives. Cover the mixture with a towel, and let your yeast bloom for about 5-15 minutes. I found it took about 15 minutes.
Step Two
Once your yeast has bloomed, mix in the salt. Slowly mix in the flour 1 cup at a time. Continue doing this until the dough is no longer sticky. Check if the dough bounces back by pressing your finger into the dough.
Step Three
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about a 1 minute. Roll your dough into a ball and cut the dough into desired portion sizes. This recipe makes 8 large pretzels, but you can make as many as you wish by altering the size used.
Step Four
To create the mickey shape roll your chunk of dough into a long rope. This part was tricky. You almost have to pull and roll at the same time, and work quickly. To make a mickey shaped head, start at the bottom of his face and loop each ear. Then connect the other end of the dough back at the bottom. Almost like tying a shoelace.
Step Five
Mix together 6 cups of water and 1/3 c baking soda. Bring this mixture to a boil. Use a slotted spatula to place a pretzel in the boiling water. Boil each pretzel for about 25 seconds flipping it half way through. Scoop the pretzel out of the water and let the excess water drain off. Place the boiled pretzel on a greased cookie sheet.
Step Six
Beat an egg in a bowl and brush the egg thinly on top of your boiled pretzels. Sprinkle the pretzels with coarse salt.
Step Seven
Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Then, broil them for another 2 minutes. Keep a close eye on them while broiling so they don’t burn.
Step Eight
Next step is optional, but who doesn’t want cheese sauce with their Mickey pretzel? For my cheese sauce, I simply melted cheez whiz, a cheese slice and a drop of milk, in a bowl. I mixed it thoroughly and made my pretzel delicious!
There you have it! Pop on some Mickey ears, enjoy some Disney tunes, and enjoy a Mickey treat.
