Disney’s Animal Kingdom, hands down, has some of the best dining you’ll find at Walt Disney World. There are so many great and unique choices that it’s honestly hard to choose. And it’s not just table service options that are fantastic (I’m looking at you Tiffins) but the counter service options are also delicious too. And while the new and shiny Satu’li Canteen seems to be getting all the praise lately, there’s one restaurant that has been incredibly stable in its yummy offerings and that’s Flame Tree Barbecue. This was the go-to place before Pandora opened.
Flame Tree Barbecue sits in Discovery Island and the experience starts with different cashiers from which you can place your order. The entire restaurant is outdoors, with open air seating areas. There is definitely no shortage of seating for Flame Tree Barbecue, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding a seat, and my favorite place to go is by the water where you get to overlook the Rivers of Light lake and have a picturesque view of Expedition Everest. Do watch out though! Because this is an outdoor dining location, the birds are quite plentiful! There will be a lot of them around and they will peck for scraps. As a reminder, do not feed the birds on purpose.
Flame Tree, of course, specializes in barbecue offerings. Menu items include a half of a chicken, St. Louis-style ribs, a number of sampler platters, and more. I decided to try one of the more unique offerings for the restaurant though – the Baked Macaroni & Cheese with Pulled Pork. This is Baked Macaroni and Cheese that’s topped with Smoked Pulled Pork, Onion Rings and Coleslaw.
This dish was really really good. There was plenty of pulled pork that was piled on top of the macaroni and cheese. The pork had a nice smokey flavor to it. It was good quality meat too – not fatty at all. If you want, you can choose to add barbecue sauce to it, which of course, I did. The barbecue sauce can be found near the condiment station.
The mac and cheese was exceptional cheesy and there were two large onion rings that were placed on top. These were perfectly crunchy and delicious. (Though, you know what would be better, as a mix in….onion strings!…but I digress.)
Overall, this was a very filling dish that I would absolutely 100% get again when visiting Flame Tree Barbecue!

I love Flame Tree Barbecue! Last time we were in the Animal Kingdom, we had the French Fries with Pulled Pork and Cheese! Being my first time trying them, I was shocked with how addicting they were. The cheese melted right into the tenderness of the pork, with the BBQ sauce giving it just the right amount of tang. My husband and I were about to share it as a meal too, so it’s budget-friendly as well.
