I recently had the opportunity to have lunch at San Angel Inn, in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion. I have always wanted to eat here because of the ambiance and was really excited to finally be able to give it a shot. Our trip was at the end of October 2018 and our reservation was a late lunch at about 3:30 p.m. This would be our last stop before having to leave for the airport to go home. That is always a sad time in a trip, so I wanted to end it with something a little bit different.
As a person who suffers with Celiac Disease, I have a certain trepidation about eating at places where I do not fully understand the names of all ingredients because if the waitstaff can’t help me decipher and I am not sure what is what, then I will have trouble eating safely. Luckily the waitstaff here was wonderful and the menu was marked very clearly with gluten free items. Our waiter at San Angel Inn was very patient and asked me what my allergy specifically was and he was very clear on what I could and could not have. Often times, I am limited to one or two options on a menu, but here there were so many wonderful gluten free options to choose from!
We were a party of 4 and the waiter brought out chips with salsa and guacamole for us to enjoy while we decided on our orders. He assured me they were corn chips and safe for me to eat. They were fresh and delicious as was the salsa.
For my drink, I decided on the Sangria which was Red Wine, Tequila, Orange Liqueur, Agave Nectar and Fruit Juices. It was delicious! It was a sizable drink and very refreshing.
For lunch I finally decided to get something fairly straight forward; I decided on the Tacos De Carne. As you can see on the menu above, it is braised beef, poblano peppers and onions. It was served with guacamole, beans and rice. It came with warm corn tortillas and salsa verde. Our waiter assured me the tortillas were made from only corn (vs. mixed with wheat flour).
When the plate came out, I was so surprised at the amount of food presented. Everything was very hot and flavorful. I really enjoyed the beef as it was extremely tender. The rice was moist and flavorful. Everything on the plate seemed fresh. The vegetables were a nice addition to each taco. There was just enough heat in the dish as well. It was not over-powering. The tortillas were fresh and remained warm. I really enjoyed my gluten free meal at San Angel and highly recommend it to those with gluten issues. It was a lot of food, very filling and I did not feel it was a dish that was simply thrown on the menu to satisfy a gluten allergy. It felt authentic and was awesome! Provecho!
